White Lady Funerals Southport Heritage Building

Built in 1936 by Ralf Tennant Johnston, the Sata Nita building is the home to White Lady Funerals Southport since June 2018. It was built as a bridal suite ahead of his marriage to his bride to be, Lisa Hughes. The building was erected in Spanish mission style, employed on the Gold Coast beachfront in buildings used by swimmers as change rooms and surf clubs.

The building is one of the city’s oldest and quirkiest, featuring a wooden floor cut from a single tree in the Numinbah Valley in the Gold Coast Hinterland. A plasterer was brought from Italy to design and construct the interior ceiling which took more than six months for completion. Still in mint condition, the ceiling plasterwork is representative of the period it was built and the entrance door features some of the original leadlight glass works.

Sata Nita became an antiques store in 1980s when it changed owners and in 1994, it became home to Somerville Funerals Southport. Sata Nita became White Lady Funerals in June 2018, and continues to impress those who visit the funeral home with its long distinct heritage. Much of the original decor remains the same and the fit-outs truly set our funeral home apart. White Lady Funerals Southport captures a snapshot of the evolution of architecture and funeral services offered to families in the Gold Coast region.

Meet Jenny Crewes, location manager at White Lady Funerals in Southport.

What do you enjoy about your job?

Helping families design unique personalised funerals. I have great knowledge of facilities and suppliers across the Gold Coast and love the creativity I can bring to personalising a service that reflects the character and passions of the person we are looking after.

How long have you been a location manager?

I have been a Location Manager since 2006.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

I love gardening, cooking, walking on our beautiful Gold Coast beaches, caring for my cats, spending social time with my Rotary Club members and friends, but most of all spending time with my husband (we only married in December 2017 so we are basically still newlyweds)

Are there any special community groups you work with or support?

I have a range of special community groups that I support. Most significantly I am a long time member of the Rotary Club of Broadwater Southport, my membership is very important to me and I love being a Rotarian. I am also on the Board of the Southport Chamber of Commerce, working as part of the Events team to plan our functions and activities.

Each year White Lady Funerals participate in Gold Coast Open House – a day when buildings of historic or architectural significance are open to the public, White Lady Funerals Southport meets both criteria and it is a pleasure to have the public come through our building on tours.
